Chemical UV filter

A chemical UV filter that absorbs UVB. It's one of the two filters most often linked with coral reef concerns, which is why we don't call the Extreme stick reef safe.

Octocrylene

Chemical UV filter

A chemical UV filter that absorbs UVB and some UVA, and helps keep other filters stable.

Ingredient questions

Which Sun Zapper products are mineral only?

Our Pure Zinc range: Pure Zinc SPF 50, Kids SPF 50, Baby SPF 30, Tinted Face SPF 30, Non-Comedogenic SPF 50, Anti-Ageing Tinted SPF 30 and Anti Mozzie SPF 50. Each uses 25% non-nano zinc oxide as its only UV filter.

Do your zinc sticks contain chemical UV filters?

Yes. Our sticks combine zinc oxide with other UV filters to give thick, visible coverage that lasts 4 hours in the water. The original sticks also contain octocrylene, diethylamino hydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate and ethylhexyl triazone. The Extreme stick also contains octinoxate and octocrylene. If you want mineral only on your face, use a Pure Zinc cream.

Does Sport Sunscreen contain zinc?

No. Sport Sunscreen SPF 50+ uses chemical UV filters only, which keeps it light and easy to rub in, and it's 4 hours water resistant. If you want mineral protection, choose Pure Zinc.

What does non-nano zinc oxide mean?

It means the zinc oxide isn't made of nanoparticles, which are particles smaller than 100 nanometres. Our Pure Zinc range uses 25% non-nano zinc oxide. It works by sitting on top of skin and reflecting and scattering UV.

Which products do you call reef safe?

Only our Pure Zinc range. Those creams contain no oxybenzone or octinoxate, two UV filters often linked with coral reef damage. There's no official reef-safe test, so we'd rather show you the full list. Our zinc sticks, Clear Zinc and Sport Sunscreen use other UV filters, so we don't call them reef safe.

Are your sunscreens fragrance free?

None of our lists contain added parfum. Pure Zinc SPF 50 and Anti Mozzie SPF 50 contain vanillin and coriander oil, which have a natural scent. Our Kids, Baby, Tinted Face, Non-Comedogenic and Anti-Ageing creams don't. If you react to fragrance ingredients, check the full list first.

Do any of your products contain nut or coconut ingredients?

Baby SPF 30, Tinted Face SPF 30, Non-Comedogenic SPF 50 and Anti-Ageing SPF 30 contain apricot kernel oil. Those creams and Kids SPF 50 also contain coco-octanoate/decanoate, which is made from coconut, and Clear Zinc contains coconut fruit extract and avocado oil. If you have an allergy, check the pack and speak to your GP or pharmacist before use.

Do you use parabens?

No. None of our products contain parabens.

How do I read an ingredient list?

Ingredients are listed from the largest amount to the smallest, and anything under 1% can be listed in any order. The names are international (INCI) names, which is why aloe vera shows up as Aloe Barbadensis. Our A–Z above translates them.

How should I use your sunscreens?

Apply generously before you go out, and reapply at least every 2 hours and straight after swimming, towelling or sweating. For external use only. Avoid your eyes, and stop using it if irritation develops. If you have sensitive skin, patch test first. Keep babies under 6 months out of direct sun.
